Lord, if You
were to eat at
my table,
what would
You think
of my offering?
Of the plates
and cups
and what fills them?
In the breaking
of bread together,
would my broken
heart begin
to grow whole?
Imagine the feast
we could have,
as we sat with
arms brushing
while passing
the bread bowl,
half-drunk wine
in our glasses,
the warmth in
our bellies—
from the food,
or conversation,
or both.

I am reminded of Revelation 3:20–Jesus waits for us to invite Him in to dine. According to the footnotes in my Bible: “The promise of intimacy with Christ is expressed in the invitation to open the door, so He can come in to dine.”
