Waited

The longer he waited, the tighter his heart fit in his chest. She told him she would come, that she would take his hand in hers and together they would fly. But here, alone in the countryside with no one to soothe him but the wind’s gentle whisper, the only breath that moved was the second hand on his watch. Each tick propelled him further into the future, and he worried that soon he’d be too far ahead for her to find him.
